YOU MATTER

Birthday Campaign

GIFT GIVING FOR FOSTER YOUTH

We use gifts and personalized notes to let foster youth know that they are special and important to this world, and not forgotten.

Donate today to help every foster youth know that they matter.

We give presents to current foster youth on their birthday so that they know they matter to this world and that they are important. Each gift helps foster youth get hungry to discover and cultivate what makes them unique in this world.

How We Do It

Gifts Through CASA

The Fostered is a nonprofit gift-giving program led by-and-for former foster youth and foster youth stakeholders.  Our former foster youth works with CASA to select personalized gifts for current and former foster youth each month.

Self-Sufficiency & Critical Thinking

While our presents are designed to help the youth know that they matter, we also look for the gifts that will stimulate the self sufficiency and critical thinking skills in the individual.  We know this is an important aspect of creating a community of happy and successful adults.

Creating "Wow" Moments

The Fostered thinks critically about how to enhance a youth’s life.  Incredible “Wow” Moments are made possible through generous gifts from local individuals in Victoria, TX region and beyond.

Why Support YOU MATTER Campaign?

Former Foster Youth Are Special...

The Fostered’s gift giving let’s youth know that they are important and helps them develop the critical thinking and self-sufficiency skills necessary to prepare for successful independent living.

Each year, over 430,000 children in the United States come in contact with foster care administrators, social workers, resource parents, kinship placements, counselors, and child advocates.  There is a multiplier effect on this number when you consider the countless families touched by these youth and the other survivors of trauma that never enter into the foster care system.

Our core demographic is 9-18 year old youth who experienced childhood trauma and/or are preparing to exit the foster care system.  The population that will have the greatest need for our gifts are young adults who are preparing to exit the foster care system with minimal support.

Serve The Most Vulnerable Population
  • Studies show that any person who has experienced even 1 Adverse Childhood Experience (pretty much any form of stressful or traumatic event as a child) is more likely to have a shorter lifespan while experiencing mental illness and substance abuse (Burke Harris, 2014). Any youth in foster care has at least 1 Adverse Childhood Experience by definition of being placed in foster care.

  • Youth who have been survivors of trauma or foster care are placed at a severe disadvantage in the job market due to inadequate skills, knowledge, stress management, and confidence to compete.

  • Foster youth suffer in the areas of confidence, computer literacy, job readiness, time management, burnout, depression, and personal development, to name a few.

  • Foster Youth are 400 times more likely to become homeless, dependent on welfare or incarcerated rather than graduate high school.

  • Less than 3% of former foster youth graduate college (compared to the national average of 20%) which places them into lower paying jobs and more likely to battle poverty and homelessness and/or become dependant on social services.

  • These undereducated, low-income current and former youth need to learn specific skills to live independent lives outside of the social welfare system.

You Can Help!

The Fostered is an official 501(C)3 nonprofit  based in Victoria, TX.  We currently offer birthday gifts for youth selected by CASA of Golden Crescent.  However, with your help, we can provide gifts to children in your region and even across the nation!  Birthday gifts are just one way to tell youth of all ages that they matter! We want every child in the world to know that they are important and have something to offer this world.  We use gifts and personalized notes to let them know that they are special and not forgotten. We will continue to grow our gift giving program and look for many other ways to help create a community of happy and successful adults who were in foster care.

To fulfill this vision, The Fostered is looking for donations to sponsor the YOU MATTER Birthday Gifts and we welcome opportunities to create workshops, educational support, and employment placement opportunities in the Golden Crescent Region.

We envision a world where former foster youth graduate far above average and live a fulfilling life independent of the child welfare system!
